Exhibit of 19th century European oils

A rare exhibition of important 19th-century European oil paintings is underway at the Shanghai Grand Theater Gallery through the end of June.

Titled "Idyllic Life on Easels - European Classics," the exhibition features 34 canvases from Germany, Italy and the UK.

Such exhibitions in China are rare because of the high costs of transport, insurance and security.

The exhibition is one of a series of events to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship between Germany and China.

It include works by Italo Giordani (1882-1956), Jerzy Kossak (1886-1955), Otto Peiffer (1888-1976) and others not always mentioned in Western art history.

According to the organizer, the exhibition includes landscapes, scenes of daily life, portraits and other subjects rendered in classical, romantic, realistic and impressionist styles.

Date: Through June 30 (close on Mondays), 10:30am-5:30pm

Address: 286 Huangpi Rd N.
