Festival snack meets coffee culture
JUST as mooncakes are an integral part of the Mid-Autumn Festival, zongzi - traditionally glutinous rice with a filling, wrapped in bamboo leaves - are a vital element of the Dragon Boat Festival.
The festival has its origins in ancient China, and while Starbucks cannot claim a connection stretching back quite so far, since their introduction in 2009, the famous coffee brand's dragon dumplings have become a star product.
For 2012, Starbucks has added new features to bring a sense of freshness to the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on June 23 this year.
Starbucks dragon dumplings combine coffee culture and the Chinese holiday, the dumplings characterized by delicious fillings and a crunchy crystallized skin.
This year's dumpling's are inspired by popular Starbucks drinks and come in four flavors: green tea and red bean, strawberry and cream, coffee almond and mango.
The mango dumpling captures the unique aroma of the tropical fruit with sweet and sour tastes designed to sweep away the summer heat, while the coffee dumpling adds a hint of bitterness with its specially made coffee filling. Strawberries and cream - a British summer favorite - is particular highlight of this year's varieties. Made with sweet strawberry filling blended with a smooth cream base, it's a delightful fruity experience. The green tea and red bean dumpling takes its inspiration from closer to home, a visual delight and perfect combination of green tea and red beans.
The packaging is also worth a mention. A cool green gift basket featuring dragon designs and the Starbucks logo - connecting coffee culture with traditional Chinese festival customs.
The Starbucks dragon dumpling gift basket, containing 12 dumplings in the four varieties, costs 108 yuan (US$16.9). Mango and strawberry and cream dumplings can be purchased individually for 10 yuan each.
