Folk culture under the Shanghai expo spotlight

VISITORS have free access to various items of folk culture belonging to Yunnan Province at Shanghai Library through October 5, as part of the 2018 Shanghai China National Folk Culture Expo.
With the theme “Colorful Yunnan,” the expo sets several exhibition zones with regional characteristics.
That includes the Kunming Zone, featuring a combination of traditional culture and fashion concepts; Wenshan Zone, characterized by folk art crafts and Yunnan specialties; Chuxiong Zone focuses on the embroidery and culture of the Yi ethnic group; Shicui Zone highlighted by creative products based on intangible cultural heritage; as well as a Comprehensive Zone of other crafts from Yunnan Province and Shanghai Zone that showcases the inheriting development of intangible cultural heritage in the large metropolis.
Around 80 percent of the exhibits are related to intangible cultural heritage, according to Meng Ping’ an, secretary general of the organizing committee.
Yet, rather than simply bringing the “antiques,” the organizers plan to show a colorful Yunnan more related to residents’ life today.
Visitors may find artistic daily supplies such as Yunnan variegated copperware with a delicate, lighter decoration, jewelry box adorned with a “Jiama” woodblock print and furniture made of bamboo weaving.
Apart from ready goods, there will be live performances featuring ethnic costumes and music from Yunnan Province, as well as workshops where craftsmen will showcase their techniques.
Visitors can also try tie-dying their own scarf, make a “Jiama” woodblock print by themselves, embroider their own totem with help and taste Yunnan Pu’er tea or coffee in the interaction spots.
