Forum to highlight progress and empowerment of Chinese women
Women’s economic empowerment is a hot topic in China — which is home to 29 million female entrepreneurs. According to a Grant Thornton report, the country has the world’s highest proportion of women in senior management positions.
However, despite Chinese businesses’ willingness to improve gender ratios, women still lack opportunities equal to those of their male counterparts in many sectors.
It is widely accepted that corporations need to push women’s career development more systematically, rather than depending on government-imposed quotas.
The theme of women’s development and empowerment will be highlighted at a women’s business and trade initiative in Shanghai, which has two of the most well-known global organizations among its supporters.
The United Nations and the Shanghai Women’s Federation have confirmed their participation at the 2nd annual Women in Leadership Economic Forum China on Thursday and Friday, hosted and organized by French deal facilitation group naseba.
As the world’s largest international organization, the UN promotes and facilitates cooperation in international security, economic development and social progress, including the empowerment of women. The Shanghai Women’s Federation aims to represent and protect women’s rights and interests, and promote gender equality.
Ursula Wynhoven, general counsel of the United Nations Global Compact and a prominent speaker of the upcoming forum, said: “The United Nations Global Compact welcomes the 2nd annual WIL Forum China as an important opportunity to discuss the crucial role of business in women’s empowerment. Building on our own experiences with the Women’s Empowerment Principles (www.weprinciples.org) we very much look forward to learning and sharing with the other panelists and participants.”
In 2009, the UN launched its Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP). They are seven principles offering guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community, and include establishing high-level corporate leadership for gender equality; treating all women and men fairly at work by respecting and supporting human rights and non-discrimination; and promoting education, training and professional development for women.
The Shanghai Women’s Federation was founded in 1950 and is a mass organization striving for women’s further advancement under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
The annual WIL Economic Forum China aims to highlight the achievements of women’s economic empowerment and leadership. It provides a platform for trade associations from East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Gulf region to discuss partnerships and expansion plans with women-led businesses in China.
The two-day event features powerful speakers, including Jennifer Li, CFO of Baidu; Bessie Lee, CEO of WPP China; Fangfang Wu, CEO of Greebox; Liu Yan, CEO of Xindanwei; Eric Zheng, CEO and president of AIG Insurance China; and Jiao Yang, chairperson of the Shanghai Women’s Federation.
