Foxy little dog

DESCENDED from the primitive dogs of the ancient people of Japan, the fox-like shiba inu (brushwood dog) was bred to hunt small animals.

This working-dog characteristic is evident in today's shiba, which are keen to pursue and catch moving things.

Like a ninja warrior, a shiba moves nimbly, swiftly and effortlessly.

One of the oldest breeds in Japan, shiba represents the essence of Bushido spirit - loyal and courageous.

Many people fall in love with the dog at first sight, especially when it's running across expanses, crossing streams and moving in rhythm with nature.

Shiba looks like a little fox, weighing 18-28 pounds (8.16-12.70kg), with pointed ears and pointed muzzle.

In Japan the admirable fox represents wealth and is also considered a messenger of the gods, able to communicate between the living and the dead. The fox is associated with the rice deity and fox figures often guard entrances to ward off evil.

Weighing just 18-28 pounds and standing 15-17 inches (38.1-43.2cm) for males (females slightly shorter), the shibu has red or reddish fur with black markings.

Some are black with tan markings. It has a thick undercoat to keep it warm in winter.

The eyes are somewhat triangular, and the ears are small and triangular, always pricked up.

A small dog with a huge personality is how many people describe the shiba and owners say his or her temperament is larger than their size. He may bark at much bigger animals.

A well-bred shibu is bold, confident and strong-willed.

The foxy dog is quite intelligent, tends to be suspicious of surroundings and doesn't always get along well with other animals. He is reserved toward strangers but very affectionate with family or animals he knows.
