Fresh lobster, great steaks at Moon's

MOON'S Steakhouse, a prime choice for quality imported beef in Shanghai, has added more diversity and flavor to its classic menu with live lobsters from Boston.

Surf & Turf, the new addition on the menu, offers a perfect combination of lobster (400g) with the restaurant's best-selling dry-aged prime rib (280g). The Xintiandi branch also provides a whole live lobster (900g), 518 yuan (US$81). Reservation is required in advance.

The dish is offered at a bargain price of 688 yuan, a great treat to those who enjoy both beef and lobster.

Moon's Steakhouse opened in 2005 in the Xintiandi area and was so well received that they opened another restaurant at Swissotel Grand Shanghai in 2008. Both restaurants have a reputation for complimenting traditional main dishes with contemporary creations, bringing diners an eclectic foodie experience.

The Xintiandi location offers a cozy interior with warm light that makes diners feel comfortable upon arrival.

The lounge-style VIP room is especially nice with a long couch and a wall filled with old newspaper and magazine clippings, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.

The Swissotel branch blends with the style of the five-star hotel, but charges no service fee. The high ceiling and glamorous chandelier ensure a great fine dining experience.

Moon's Steakhouse is particularly reputed for its quality meat, offering juicy, tender cuts of steak. Before the meat appears on your plate, it is dry-aged for 15 days in a custom glass refrigerator with strict temperature and humidity control.

You can see the refrigerator at the steakhouse's entrance, which shows how a rib-eye undergoes enzymatic changes, with the color gradually deepening and the connective meat tissues becoming more tender.

This process prepares the raw material to its perfection before getting slow-cooked for three hours on Moon Steakhouse's custom slanted grill.

Instead of having the drippings wasted, the specially made grill allows flavorful juices to slide along the grating, through the surface of the steak, which locks in the flavor, making it tasty without sauce.

After both processes, the end product, with the rate of fat and lean meat just right, is so tender and tastes fantastic. To accompany the tasty steak, the house also contains a fine wine list that is suitable for all budgets. The wines range from light to full bodied and sweet to dry.

The live lobsters from the Boston area are known for a delicate texture and this is a great time of year to try the sweet meat.

The Swissotel branch also offers a twist to its chocolate cake, an all-time favorite. The rich, dense cake has been made into the shape of a mooncake just in time for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
