German Week focuses on cars and art
EVER since 2002, the annual German Week has become a popular event every autumn in Shanghai, offering local people a chance to learn about German technology, craftsmanship, culture and art.
This year's 10th German Week is now underway and will run till September 25 although some cultural and art exhibitions will continue through October 5.
The event promotes such things as the country's advanced auto technology, high-quality daily-use products, famous cuisine and traditional customs, along with prestigious musicians and artists.
It will focus on automobiles to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the invention of the car. The Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz invention in 1886 influenced and changed the history of human society.
With the theme "125 years of Das Deutsche Auto," the auto exhibition at German Week will stage the latest models of the five top German auto brands - Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen.
How human beings live in harmony with nature will be a major issue in the next 125 years.
Visitors will likely be inspired and find their own answers at the "Natural Contract" art exhibition.
The exhibition features artwork such as installations, photography and multi-media pieces by a group of contemporary artists.
For example, German artist Tobias Rosenberger's video installation "Large Scale" is on display. The video work depicts an inhabited area in the Spanish desert where the company International Leisure Development, with the full support of the local government, plans to construct a destination city of leisure that will include casino-hotels, theme parks and a racecourse.
All images were captured with pre-programmed computer-controlled moving cameras in May 2010, just a few months before construction was supposed to start.
