Girls urged to become bold, dynamic leaders
FROM an early age, Chinese girls should start thinking about becoming women leaders and become courageous, progressive women. That was the message at a recent Barnard College workshop in Shanghai for 70 high school girls from around the country.
The event was part of Barnard’s annual “Women Changing the World” symposium.
The aim is to inspire young women about their own leadership potential and during the session girls discussed the meaning of leadership. They also discussed problems in their communities and how they could initiate action to improve the situation.
Six students from Barnard College led six separate discussions.
“We identified a problem that only children feel very lonely without playmates because our country has a general birth-control policy,” said Jenny Shang, a senior high student from the High School Affiliated to Fudan University.
She and her workshop teammates proposed organizing children of different ages in one community to play together and take part in activities. They suggested a one-day tour of Shanghai longtang, the traditional residential alleyways, as a way of enhancing friendship and exploring local culture.
“We hope the students can go back to their schools and continue the ideas and projects they talked about here,” said Jennifer Fondiller, Barnard’s dean of enrollment management.
“What we do is to continue to push those women not to drop out of their jobs and to pursue leadership,” said Fondiller. “As for the students, we want them to have this idea from an early age and become very bold, forward thinking women.”
She said Barnard organized the high school workshop because women leaders are still a minority in political and business areas in both the United States and China.
