Grass-roots projects for change
SHANGHAI United Foundation or Lianquan, founded in 2009 by the Nonprofit Incubator (NPI), is a public grant-making foundation supporting and investing in grass-roots NGOs.
The foundation emphasizes a united way and tries to bridge the gap between donors and grass-roots NGOs by providing reliable communications.
Lianquan focuses on fundraising for grassroots NGOs to ease the financial burden on promising NGOs that limits their growth impact.
Lianquan can leverage the grassroots NGOs network and technical expertise of NPI, which nurtures or incubates around 30 organizations each year.The foundation focuses on seven areas of grass-roots NGO activities.
? Empowering rural communities. Activities help people in poverty by supplying micro-credit loans, domestic animals and skills training to improve agricultural practices. The aim is to give people and communities more independence so they can set their own development goals.
? Reintegration of people with disabilities. It encourages people with disabilities to take part in social activities and provides skills training so they can help support themselves and contribute to their communities.
? Community engagement. This aims to contribute to a more harmonious society by educating people on critical issues such as preventing violence against women.
? Youth support. This helps adolescents improve their leadership abilities, gain greater social acceptance an d learn valuable schools. Activities support ask-risk youth and address problems of violence, alcohol and drugs.
? Enhancing environmental awareness. Activities aim to protect the environment through education, monitoring water quality and protecting abandoned animals, among others.
? Compassion for the terminally ill. Activities help people suffering life-threatening and terminal disease by providing psychological counseling and covering some medical costs of people in need.
? Building a movement for social change. These activities use media training and support for publications that focus on grass-roots NGOs. The aim is to promote education and awareness of important issues and the need for change.
