Great art to go under hammer

A TOTAL of 889 artworks including oils, ink-wash paintings, calligraphy pieces and sculptures will go under hammer at Rongbaozhai's 2012 Autumn Auction.

Rongbaozhai, a 300-year-old dealership in China, is known for high-quality artworks with a clear provenance.

The highlight of the coming auction is a traditional ink-wash painting created by Zheng Banqiao (1693-1765), one of the "Eight Odds of Yangzhou," which refers to eight ink-wash artists with similar styles during the middle of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Zheng was formerly a government official, but was so fed up with it that he resigned and returned to his hometown. Zheng's favorite subject was bamboo, symbolizing uprightness and honesty.

The painting that will appear at the autumn auction is consigned by a Japanese collector.

Another highlight goes to the canvas by He Duolin created in 1990. He, as a pioneer in the realistic painting, often painted his ex-wife, Zhai Yongming, a famous poet. In He's eyes, Zhai was a muse not only for his life but for his art as well. Although the couple finally divorced, today they still maintain close friends.
