Green City hosts Family Day
AS the city turns golden brown in autumn, it's time for the annual outdoor Family Day in Green City.
Over the past eight years, the event has become a tradition, a gala for residents of different colors and ethnic groups in the sprawling multicultural community. They played games, watched performances and enjoyed gastronomical treats on the meadow.
Hundreds of families are lured by the surprising themes each year and children run around, shrieking with laughter in the invigorating and warm atmosphere.
This year Family Day was held on October 27, just before Halloween, and the theme was "Haunted Carnival." The venue, the American football field near Biyun Gym and Entertainment Center, was decorated with amusing symbols, jack-o'-lanterns, black cats, witches, bats and other emblems of the celebration.
Children and parents rushed onto the field with their tickets, getting pumpkin baskets to collect candies. "Trick or Treat!" the children shouted to shopkeepers while parents got ready for the events and studied the Family Day brochure containing a map of games and challenges to come.
Games are the highlight and designed for children at different levels. In the 0-3 toddler zone, games were designed by professional teachers. Children 3 to 6 years old made their way in an inflatable castle filled with inflatable toys.
Competition games included Witch Park, Skull Island club and Running Out of Zombie Village for children aged 7 to 10.
All the entertainment was high quality.
Here comes a plot. Have you heard of the Geffen Tower in legendary Norse Kingdom of Midgard? It's filled with bizarre creatures, including scorpions, skeletons and orks. There's a pumpkin man holding an umbrella. There's a rumor in the air of Ragnarok that Mr Pumpkin Jack who has slept for years is going to wake up and everyone wonders what he will bring for Halloween presents.
Each region of the competitions has its own hidden stories and treasures. Young girls and boys could take part in these elaborately designed games with various plots.
Giant Zombie Village was designed as a labyrinth. Everyone was itching to have a go as they went through the corridor to the center of the haunted house to find a treasure.
In another region, a crazy king in a ghost castle was waiting to be challenged.
Elements such as witches and skeletons put the children on edge.
A special area was opened for family games in which each member of a family cooperated with others to accomplish a task. Big prizes were awarded to those who succeeded in all games and collected stamps on their Family Day brochure.
No matter who won, the children enjoyed themselves and enjoyed making new friends and spending time with old ones.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, the annual International Youth Football Game was in full swing. Little footballers from all over the world competed.
Players from different international schools staged performances.
Parents, couples and older people also had fun, watching performances by a Latin band and Chinese kung fu team. At one side of the stage, big tents were set up in a food street offering food from around the world, including barbecue, salad, cakes and pizza. Visitors relaxed as they strolled around the lawn, enjoying delicious food in the friendly community atmosphere.
Annual Family Day in Green City is more than an event, it's a melting pot of globalized culture and ideas that presents refreshingly different themes and activities every year.
It always ends harmoniously, with cheers and laughter. There's a lot of lingering around afterward.
Though Family Day is over, multicultural interaction continues. Green City welcomes everyone with open arms.
