Hip hangouts on Fenyang Road

AS Taojiang Road meets Fenyang Road, the peaceful atmosphere changes to a busier, dynamic vibe. This section of the former French concession is home to a variety of restaurants, bars and boutiques which showcase food and fashion from across the globe. This week we continued our search from the cross road of Taojiang Road and Fenyang Road down toward Fuxing Road M. A beautiful Italian restaurant, quirky fashion boutique and a lively sports bar are just some of what the top section of Fenyang Road has to offer.

William the Bee Keeper

In keeping with its name, William the Bee Keeper is a wonderfully unusual vintage boutique from the creators of American fashion brand Kaileeni. Focusing on the concept of sustainable development, everything in the small shop, including the furniture and decorations, is for sale. The layout of William the Bee Keeper is simple, yet the variety of unique items on sale is exciting to the eye and makes for a truly enjoyable shopping experience. There is a selection of Kaileeni brand clothing, all modeled on the vintage styles of Asia and America and made using a mixture of imported and domestic fabrics. William the Bee Keeper offers authentic vintage clothes and shoes at affordable prices. A tailored, black jacket costs 300 yuan (US$47) and shoes range between 200 yuan and 400 yuan. The boutique also provides a platform for up and coming designers. Twice a year, William the Bee Keeper holds a clothes swap in Cotton's bar and The Apartment. Leftover clothes are donated to charity.

Mogoo Café

Mogoo is a quirky cafe with a comfortable atmosphere. The concept focuses on travel and the interior is decorated with a variety of pictures and objects from around the world. The style of Mogoo café is slightly European, which is created through use of a red and black color scheme. Soft jazz music plays in the background. This is further emphasized by the "One card, One World" board which displays postcards from around the world. Mogoo is particularly busy at lunch times when a mixture of locals and expats gather. It aims to create a community feel and many of its customers are regulars. There is a selection of set breakfast, lunch and dinner deals, including Asian, sandwich and pasta sets all priced between 20 yuan and 50 yuan. Mogoo is also popular with tourists who peruse the pages of the books on display.

Colabo

Hidden in a lane on Fenyang Road, Colabo is one of the most popular eateries in the area. The four-floor European style garden house was renovated into cozy dining spaces on each floor. A newly opened pizza eatery Pizzeria Azzurra is on the first floor and offers Naples-style pizzas (180g) costing from 90 yuan to 180 yuan. The second to fourth floor belongs to the Italian restaurant Colaboa. The lunch sets are extremely popular with a full set costing either 65 yuan or 85 yuan. It includes combo salad, a choice of pasta, pizza or main course plus a drink. To order the most popular spaghetti with crab in tomato cream sauce, an extra 25 yuan is required. The speciality "Charcoal Grills" is recommended off the a la carte dinner. The grilled Aussie T-Bone steak Tuscan style is 55 yuan for 100 grams.

The Camel Sports Bar

The Camel aims to provide a comfortable, homely atmosphere in which to drink, socialize and watch live sporting events. There is a wide variety of beers from around the world, which includes speciality ciders. The Camel is modeled on an Australian bar and plays many AFL and cricket matches. But it caters to a wide range of sporting tastes, playing all of the major matches from across the world. Happy hour is daily between 4pm and 8pm and there are a variety of special evening deals across the week. Tuesdays are busy with a pub quiz from 8pm and two for one drink and food offers. On Tuesdays there is an additional offer of T-bone steak with a pint of Carlsberg for 160 yuan. Between 11am and 4pm every Sunday, a roast chicken meal is available for 80 yuan. Additionally, set lunch menus offer a Western option for around 55 yuan and a Chinese option for 35 yuan.
