Hip-hop meets jazz in JZ concert on Sunday
THE JZ Shanghai concert series returns this Sunday at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center with a creative performance titled "When Hip-hop Meets Jazz."
The concert aims to fuse the two genres in a performance by the new, international jazz and hip-hop band in Shanghai, The Word, which has released is debut EP.
The musicians from around the world play various instruments and include vocalists, rappers and surprise special guests.
Most performers are veterans. They include Shanghai-based French musician Gauthier Roubichou presenting rap and vocals.
One of the band's two front men, Roubichou brings high energy and impressive vocal and guitar skills.
Over the past 10 years he has been in the music, TV and cinema industries; he was a finalist in the 2004 "French Idol."
To the mix, American Dana Shellmire brings a soulful, spritely mezzo-soprano voice.
The singer-songwriter combines joyful melodies, deep grooves, urban culture and conversational lyrics.
The band expects to deliver an energetic and funky afternoon. Organizers say the mix of cultures and languages on stage will speak the universal language, The World of music.
The JZ Shanghai concert series is hosted by JZ Music and stages highlight performances every three months.
The next performance featuring romantic songs will be held in August to celebrate Chinese Valentine's Day which falls on August 6 this year.
In addition to Roubichou (rap, vocal) and Shellmire (vocal), the band includes Americans Mike Brownell (bass) and Chris Trzcinski (drums), Canadian Toby Mak (trumpet), Norwegian Steinar Nickelsen (keyboard), Dutchman Amine el Filali (rap) and Frenchman Jay Lasry (guitar).
