How to legally register your marriage in Shanghai

Gather the required documents

For Chinese Citizens:

ID card

Residence booklet (hukou)

Single status affirmation (a signed document confirming you’re single and not closely related to your spouse-to-be).

For Foreign Nationals:

Passport with a valid visa

Marriage Affidavit (this document can be obtained from your country’s consulate or embassy)

For Both:

Photographs (ensure they meet the photo requirements)

Notarization & translation

Ensure that all your documents are notarized and translated into Chinese. This is a key step to make sure everything is in order. If you’re a foreign national, double-check with your consulate for any additional requirements.

Suishenban app: digital convenience

In Shanghai, much of the registration process can be handled digitally. Use the Suishenban (One-Stop Service) app to:

Make an appointment for your marriage registration.

Choose Your Location: You can register your marriage at either the citywide marriage registration office or the district-level office, depending on where you live.

Submit required documents electronically.

Track your registration progress.

The app simplifies the entire procedure, saving time and offering a more convenient experience.

Photo for your marriage registration

Before heading to the marriage registration center, make sure to take a clear and professional photo. This photo will appear on your official marriage certificate, so it’s important to look your best and follow the photo guidelines.

Visit the marriage registration center

Once your documents are ready and you’ve scheduled an appointment, head to the local marriage registration center to complete your marriage registration. With the new pilot programs, the process has become more efficient and accessible for foreign nationals.

Complete the process

At the Marriage Registration Center, you’ll sign paperwork, and the foreign national may need to complete some digital signing. The registration process is quick, typically wrapping up in less time than expected. You’ll leave with your marriage certificate and a sense of accomplishment!
