Is osprey fishing dying out gradually?
EVERY day, Zhou Shan goes out fishing with his feathered friends at the Daheiting Reservoir in Hebei Province. Osprey fishing has been passed down generations in this remote village of Maxi in Zunhua City.
Zhou started learning to fish with osprey from his father and grandfather at the age of six. With many local fishermen quitting the trade now for newer options, 54-year-old Zhou is among the few who have persisted with osprey fishing.
Zhou fears that osprey fishing could become a thing of the past given the lack of interest and enthusiasm among people. “The skill of osprey fishing will be forgotten one day,” he says and wants the newer generation to continue the tradition.
