Jazz at Lincoln Center visits Bund

FROM New York to Shanghai, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is bringing its top cast to the historic Bund area with a live jazz quintet from next Thursday to Saturday.

Five musicians led by Dominick Farinacci - an American jazz trumpeter and musical prodigy highly praised by Hollywood record producer Quincy Jones - will perform at the Union Church.

Farinacci, 30, began playing the trumpet in the sixth grade in Ohio, and by 17 he performed at the Tri-C Jazzfest in Cleveland. He is currently art director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Doha in Qatar.

In Shanghai, he will perform several locally famous songs to interpret his understanding of Shanghai's culture.

Union Church will be decorated similarly to JALC's Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City, with its sensational acoustics and intimate club setting. With an audience limited to 150, chairs will be moved near the front of the stage and food and drink will be served during the performance.

The setting is designed to feel like half theater and half music bar.

Zheng Deren, a former member of the Old Jazz Band at the Peace Hotel, who is in his 90s, says it could be a historic performance that will reshape jazz development in Shanghai. It's the first show to come from the budding collaboration centered on jazz between Chinese and American musical and development interests.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, a club that is a joint development with Shanghai Bund Investment (Group) Co Ltd, is now under construction as part of The Central, a mixed-use project on Nanjing Road E. set to open in 2016.

Date: July 25-27, 7:30pm
