Kia World Extreme Games return to Shanghai

SHANGHAI will host the Kia World Extreme Games from April 25 to May 3, an event which will bring together some of the world’s best extreme sport athletes.
This will also mark the ninth time the event — formerly known as the Kia X Games Asia — will be staged in Shanghai since 2007.
Organizers say that 175 athletes from 25 countries and regions will compete in events such as freestyle BMX, skateboarding and speed climbing.
In addition to the world-class competition, Freestyle Moto X and Aggressive In-Line Skating demonstrations are also planned to entertain the crowds.
The games in Shanghai will be televised live and broadcast on FOX Sports in Asia and globally. The broadcast will also air on STV Sports channel and CCTV-5.
With only days left before the start of the event, let’s take a look at some of the venues and expected highlights for this year’s event.
Vert at Oriental Pearl Tower
This year’s competition will feature newly designed vert courses set up in front of the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Pudong, in addition to an existing venue at Jiangwan Stadium in Yangpu District.
The Skateboard and BMX Vert Final will be the curtain-raiser to the main BMX and skateboarding vert competitions scheduled for April 28-29 at Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
It will feature a bevy of top notch names in action sports such as Trey Wood, Neal Hendrix, Andy Macdonald, Dennis McCoy, Simon Tabron, Lizzie Armanto as well as BMX legend Mat Hoffman, who will be thrilling the crowds with their gravity-defying flips and moves.
Street course at KIC
For the very first time, the street course competition will be moved from inside Jiangwan Stadium to outdoor on the streets (literally), as the organizers aim to keep the action authentic within a natural yet competitive setting.
Pioneering the build and design of a new street course at Shanghai’s KIC Plaza, organizers will integrate proven formats from other street course competitions while also enhancing the plaza’s existing structure and course.
Climbing wall
The new climbing wall is designed to up the level of competition, while providing an engaging viewing experience for the audience.
Mini Mega
The three-story-high Mini Mega will play host to the BMX and Skateboard competitions at Jiangwan Stadium from May 1 to 3.
The only event of its kind in Asia, fans are in for a real treat this year with stars such as Trey Wood, Vince Bryon, Dennis McCoy and for the very first time, 13-year-old Alana Smith competing on her skateboard against the boys!
Motocross
Perennial crowd favorite motocross will return to Jiangwan Stadium once again with some of the world’s best FMX riders thrilling and wowing the audience with their perfectly timed stunts and jumps.
