King of Pop honored in exhibition by local fans
MORE than 200 vinyl phonograph records, plus concert posters, ticket stubs and small memorabilia collected by local fans of Michael Jackson are on display.
Video clips of Jackson's performances will also be played at the exhibition at Madame Tussaud's Shanghai that runs through June 30. It marks the fourth anniversary of the death of the King of Pop (1958-2009).
The exhibition gives a modest retrospective on his career.
Some records are very rare, such as "Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5," the debut album of the family band, the Jackson 5, released in 1969. Other rare records are the limited editions of "Smile" and "Thriller."
Michael Jackson, then 11 years old, was the lead singer and soon began his solo career.
"Smile" was not released on a large scale. Only few records can be found in Holland and South Africa.
The 1982 record "Thriller," sold over nine million copies, was the highest-selling album in history. It was listed by the Guinness World Records as the "most successful music video."
Jackson also took part in the design for the tickets of the "This Is It" concert series. The tickets with a 3D effect are on also display.
Video clips of Jackson's spectacular performances will be played. Visitors can watch the "space dance" from the video and have their photos taken beside the wax figure of Jackson, from the period of "Invincible."
Four years ago on June 25, the iconic singer died of acute intoxication from drugs improperly administered to make him sleep.
According to Michael Chan, director of the Michael Jackson Fans Club in Shanghai and an organizer of the event, the exhibition pays tribute to the star who "brought vibrant energy to the world music scene."
"Despite the passage of time, Jackson's shining moments on stage will never fade away," Chan says. "He lives in our hearts."
