Liza spent her last decade in retirement
MRS S. A. (Liza) Hardoon, the 78-year-old Chinese wife of the late Mr Silas Aaron Hardoon, died suddenly in her home, 1273 Bubbling Well Road, at 6 o’clock yesterday evening after a brief illness.
One of the richest persons in the Far East, Mrs Hardoon was left what is today estimated as a fortune of CN$700,000,000 when her husband died on June 17, 1931. She is survived by 11 adopted sons and daughters.
Despite her enormous resources and the huge interests which she represented in Shanghai and elsewhere, Mrs Hardoon spent the last decade of her life in complete retirement in her huge estate which takes in a great part of Bubbling Well Road, Avenue Foch and Hardoon Road.
Her passing will come as a profound shock to thousands of friends and associates throughout the world, especially in view of the fact that she was the last remaining figure, who saw the great Hardoon estate rise to power in Shanghai.
Mrs Hardoon, in cooperation with her late husband, established an institute of education named St Ching’s College in pursuance of her deep interest in all things pertaining to China and her people. Scores of Chinese youths owe their education to her assistance.
That she had a heart also for things which were not of China may be shown by her spontaneous action when together with her late husband she threw open their spacious grounds to the “British Defence Force” which arrived here in 1927 and provided them with everything necessary in the way of food and accommodation.
Nanking Road and the neighborhood were hers in great part and in much more than name alone. It has been estimated that her assets in such local lands should, at present rates, add up to a sum of CN$700,000,000 or an equivalent of about 10,000,000 British pounds.
She adopted the Hebrew religion after her marriage. All her adopted children follow the Hebrew religion.
For years it has been a well-known fact that most of the important pieces of land in the International Settlement and French Concession were the property of the Hardoon family. A befitting memorial in the shape of the Liza Building on Nanking Road was erected several years ago.
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Hardoon are expected to take place within the next few days. It is believed that she will be buried next to her husband in the garden of their residence.
