Maazel to lead Munich Philharmonic
LORIN Maazel will visit Shanghai next month with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, around three months after he stepped in at the last minute to replace the ailing Riccardi Muti to lead Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the city.
The 83-year-old maestro is the music director of Munich Philharmonic. A living legend, Maazel has conducted nearly 200 orchestras in no fewer than 7,000 opera and concert performances. He has made more than 300 recordings.
In his upcoming Shanghai concert, Maazel is bringing back three very different works, including Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet Overture," Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 4" and Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring."
Pianist Zhang Haochen, 22, will cooperate in the Beethoven piano concerto.
While the first two compositions are more popular and conventional, "Rite of Spring" is quite unconventional and avant-garde, almost causing a riot in the audience when it premiered in Paris in 1913. Audiences either loved it or hated it. An orchestral work and ballet, the original was choreographed by Nijinsky.
The story is about ancient rituals choosing a young girl as a sacrifice; she dances to death to celebrate the advent of spring.
Young pianist Zhang, a native of Shanghai, was the youngest recipient of the first prize at the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009. He was 19 years old at the time. He studied under Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.,
The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has a history of 120 years, and Gustav Mahler directed the orchestra in 1897.
Date: April 26, 7:30pm
Venue: Concert Hall of Shanghai Oriental Art Center, 425 Dingxiang Rd, Pudong
Tickets: 280-1680 yuan
Tel: 962-388
