Mercedes-Benz Arena’s star-packed year
DECEMBER 30 seemed to be a double-happiness day for Mercedes-Benz Arena. First, Hong Kong pop diva Faye Wong returned to the stage after a six-year absence; Wong was the first to perform at the venue when it opened in 2010.
And on the same day, the premium German automaker Mercedes-Benz extended its partnership with AEG and Oriental Pearl Group for the naming rights to the venue until 2025.
The extension also kick-starts a series of heavyweight performances in 2017, including Metallica, Jacky Cheung, Sandy Lam, and Wu Bai and China Blue. Deemed the “God of Songs,” Hong Kong singer Cheung will come back in March and tickets for the three concerts have nearly been sold out.
“Over the past six years, Mercedes-Benz Arena has managed to integrate some of the world’s most advanced resources to redefine the live entertainment for Chinese audiences,” said Huang Jin, vice president of culture, entertainment and tourism business at Oriental Pearl Group.
With 18,000 seats, 82 luxury suites and various clubs and meeting rooms, the Mercedes-Benz Arena offers state-of-the-art amenities for big-scale events. It also includes a 800-seat theater, an ice-skating rink, a six-screen cinema, and 20,000 square meters of shops and restaurants.
In 2016 alone, it hosted more than 900,000 people and presented 273 ticketed events, making it Asia’s No. 1 sports and entertainment venue. As a destination of choice for international and domestic A-list performers, recent performances featured such big names as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift, alongside China’s Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan, Jay Chou and Faye Wong.
“Our close collaboration with Mercedes-Benz has been an outstanding success for what has evolved China’s premier venue as well as Asia’s top sports and entertainment destination,” said Adam Wilkes, president and CEO of AEG Asia.
