New library for life-long learning

THE new state-of-the-art Pudong New Area Library is open. ìIt is the ideal place for citizens to enjoy cultural leisure, spiritual pleasure and life-long learning,? says the libraryís director Zhang Wei.

The six-story comprehensive library, now in a soft opening, will officially open in October.

All the services provided by the old library on Yingchun Road will be transferred to the new one, except for the one-card book-lending and return service.

The library on Qiancheng Road in the Pudong Cultural Park covers more than 60,000 square meters, has a collection of more than 2 million volumes and a seating capacity of 3,000, five times that of the old library. It is expected to handle more than 6,000 person-times daily.

Designed as open space for the public, the library is a one-stop service provider for reading, research, lending and other facilities.

All archives are available to users who can sit and read comfortably in an open environment.

No library card is required to enter, read or use the archives.

The welcoming library features catalogue retrieval terminals, electronic reading equipment, self-service systems, copy machines, information desks and barrier-free facilities throughout.

It is intelligently equipped. Each book contains a smart chip using advanced computer network technology and radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, which give precise book locations.

The wired and wireless information networks cover each corner of the library.

The long-distance visiting system allows readers to access services from any place and at any time. Reading areas offer high-speed wireless Lan access.

The library can meet multiple needs of research activities, academic exchanges and social events, with various functional rooms, such as an information research department, special subject literature area, research room, discussion room, lecture hall, activities rooms, exhibition halls and training rooms.

During the soft opening, the third, fourth and fifth floors are first opened.

Readers holding cards from the old library can receive new cards free of charge on the first floor. New users pay an 80-yuan (US$11.80) deposit. ID cards, passports, houkou (permanent resident card) and relevant documents required.
