Percussion concert for families

A creative percussion "carnival" with more than 40 kinds of instruments - and audience participation - will be held tomorrow morning at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center in Pudong.

The family concert will be staged by the internationally renowned Hong Kong-born percussionist Lung Heung Wing, his son Mark Lung and the Hong Kong Percussion Center team. The father and son are percussion duo who have performed worldwide.

"Unlike other classical music concerts, the Percussion Carnival for Summer expects its audiences not to sit quietly and listen, but to actively take part in music making," says the father.

Lung was principal percussionist for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for 19 years and performed worldwide.

The concert will feature more than 40 kinds of percussion instruments, including Latin and African drums, toys and environmentally friendly DIY paper instruments.

Program includes well-known scores that have been rearranged by Lung, such as the "William Tell Overture" and "Radetzky March," powerful African and Latin American folk music, theme songs of popular animation films and combinations of classics and pop.

Lung has received numerous awards. In 1997, he formed the Father and Son Percussion Duo with his son Mark, and they have performed in China, Italy and Canada.

The Hong Kong Percussion Center was formed by Lung in 2003, and it's the first of its kind.

In 2002 and 2007, Lung made musical arrangements and led more than 10,000 percussionists in celebrating the 5th and 10th anniversaries of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Mark, a student at the University of Hong Kong, studies both Western and Chinese percussion and is an experienced public performer.

At the age of six, he gave a solo percussion performance at the Government House for the then-Governor Chris Patten. An enthusiastic critic described his solo as "the meanest drums since Stevie Wonder gave up skins for keys."
