Preserving a dying folk art in Fujian Province
Gaolou rice handicraft, a craft that makes three dimensional artworks with rice grains, is an endangered folk art in Fuzhou’s Gaolou Village that dates back about 100 years.
Chen Guorui, born in 1987, decided to revive the craft after graduating from an industrial art college. He consulted local elders and continued to explore, employing coloring and antisepsis technologies.
The craft has been listed as one of the intangible cultural heritages of Fuzhou, capital of southeast China’s Fujian Province. Four inheriting bases for the craft have been set up in four schools in Fuzhou’s Changle District, where Chen spends his leisure time teaching students.
