'Promenade' concert encourages strolling about

A casual classical music party will be staged by the BBC Concert Orchestra in a "Promenade" event July 18 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

Known as "The Proms" (the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts), it encourages casual dress for performers and audience who don't have to sit in their seats all the time. They can walk around, approach the orchestra and applaud as they see fit.

"Promenading" is encouraged and the works are light classical.

The orchestra, conducted by its former music director Barry Wordsworth, will perform works by Sibelius, Faure, Liszt, Verdi and Dvorak. They include Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody" No. 2, Faure's "Elegy" and Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance." Cellist Julian Webber will play a solo "Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera" composed by his brother Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Young soprano Valentina Nafornita will join the concert.

The Promenade series is a tradition in Britain and was first held in Shanghai last year, with a performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

The BBC Concert Orchestra was founded in the 1930s as one of the BBC's five symphony orchestras.

It performs light music, popular orchestral music and movie music. It is closely identified with the "Proms" in London.
