Richard Donner, 鈥榓 natural born storyteller鈥

Filmmaker Richard Donner, who helped create the modern superhero blockbuster with 1978鈥檚 鈥淪uperman鈥 and mastered the buddy comedy with the 鈥淟ethal Weapon鈥 franchise, has died. He was 91.

Donner gained fame with his first feature, 1976鈥檚 鈥淭he Omen.鈥 A then-unheard-of offer followed: US$1 million to direct 1978鈥檚 鈥淪uperman.鈥 Donner channeled his love of the character into making the film, repeatedly facing off with producers over the need for special effects that would convince the audience that a superhero could really fly. In the title role, Donner cast Christopher Reeve, who was associated with 鈥淪uperman鈥 for the rest of his life.

By the 21st century, the genre was dominating the box office in the United States and thriving overseas. The heads of Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment 鈥 producers of most of today鈥檚 superhero fare 鈥 both worked for Donner when they were starting out in Hollywood.

Steven Spielberg, who produced 鈥淭he Goonies,鈥 wrote in a statement: 鈥淒ick had such a powerful command of his movies, and was so gifted across so many genres. Being in his circle was akin to hanging out with your favorite coach, smartest professor, fiercest motivator, most endearing friend, staunchest ally, and 鈥 of course 鈥 the greatest Goonie of all. He was all kid. All heart. All the time. I can鈥檛 believe he鈥檚 gone, but his husky, hearty laugh will stay with me always.鈥

Tributes also poured in on Twitter, including from 鈥淕oonies鈥 star Sean Astin.

鈥淩ichard Donner had the biggest, boomiest voice you could imagine,鈥 Astin wrote. 鈥淗e commanded attention and he laughed like no man has ever laughed before. Dick was so much fun. What I perceived in him, as a 12-year-old kid, is that he cared. I love how much he cared.鈥

Director Kevin Smith tweeted: 鈥淩ichard Donner made the devil a child in The Omen, invented the modern day comic book movie with Superman, and reinvented the buddy cop movie with Lethal Weapon. I got to meet with him last year about a project. Guy was a natural born storyteller. Thanks for all the flicks, Dick!鈥

Filmmaker Edgar Wright added: 鈥淩ichard Donner鈥檚 big heart & effervescent charm shone in his movies through the remarkable performances of his cast, which is no mean feat. You remember all the characters in Superman, Lethal Weapon, The Goonies & more, because Donner knew how to capture that magic on-screen.鈥

Wright said he, only met Donner once but said: 鈥淗e was funny, charming and so full of stories (and happy to indulge my geeky questions).鈥

Donner followed 鈥淪uperman鈥 with an indie, 鈥淚nside Moves,鈥 in 1980 and 鈥淭he Toy鈥 with Richard Pryor in 1982. In 1985, he made the kids鈥 adventure classic 鈥淭he Goonies鈥 and 鈥淟adyhawke,鈥 which would introduce him to his future wife, Lauren Shuler Donner.

The two married the following year. In 1993, they founded The Donners Company, which has produced such hits as 鈥淒eadpool,鈥 鈥淭he Wolverine鈥 and the 鈥淴-Men鈥 franchise. Adjusted for inflation, his films have generated more than US$1 billion in box office receipts.

鈥淟et me tell you: Dick Donner directing is truly the sexiest man alive,鈥 Shuler Donner said at a film academy tribute to the director in 2017.

She said a director鈥檚 personality often reveals itself on-screen.

鈥淚f you look at Dick鈥檚 movies, Dick is fun, larger than life, loud, strong, with a big mushy heart,鈥 she said. 鈥淗is confidence, his fearlessness, his humor are what make people adore him and has wrapped around me like a protective cloak.

鈥淭he combination of learning moviemaking from Richard Donner and falling in love with him has made me personally and professionally a better producer and a happier, loving person,鈥 she continued, calling 鈥淟adyhawke鈥 their 鈥減ersonal love story.鈥

鈥淚鈥檓 the hawk and he鈥檚 the wolf,鈥 she said.

In 1987, Donner cast Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as a mismatched police pair in the buddy-cop action film 鈥淟ethal Weapon.鈥 The film was a smash, spawning several sequels and a TV show.

鈥淗e was a master storyteller,鈥 Gibson said in 2017. 鈥淗e was humble. He had this sign over this door that said 鈥楲eave your ego at the door,鈥 and there was no ego around him. It was hard for me to walk into the room, actually.鈥

Donner followed up with the Bill Murray hit 鈥淪crooged鈥 in 1988 and 鈥淟ethal Weapon 2鈥 the next year.

His other credits include 鈥淢averick,鈥 鈥淐onspiracy Theory鈥 and 鈥淩adio Flyer.鈥

Born Richard Donald Schwartzberg on April 24, 1930, in New York, Donner changed his name when he set out to become an actor.

鈥淚 would have been an out-of-work actor now if it wouldn鈥檛 have been for the great director Marty Ritt,鈥 Donner said.

He recalled Ritt telling him: 鈥淵our problem is you can鈥檛 take direction,鈥 and suggesting he pursue directing instead.

鈥淎nd because I鈥檇 been hanging with him a little bit, he said: 鈥榊ou鈥檙e my assistant on the next show,鈥 and that turned my life around,鈥 Donner said. 鈥淚 never went back to acting.鈥

He started working in television, directing episodes of 鈥淕illigan鈥檚 Island,鈥 鈥淧erry Mason鈥 and 鈥淭he Twilight Zone.鈥

Away from the camera, Donner was known for his extraordinary kindness and generosity, covering college tuition for one 鈥淕oonies鈥 star (Jeff Cohen, now an entertainment attorney) and paying for life-saving rehab for another (actor Corey Feldman).

Donner said in a 1985 interview that the young cast helped him through the production.

鈥淚 never had kids of my own, and they became like my family,鈥 he said.

Cohen, Feldman and 鈥淟ethal Weapon鈥 star Rene Russo were among those lauding Donner for his kindness at the 2017 film academy tribute.

鈥淵ou were charming and funny and witty and all these amazing (things), but the thing that killed me is you were kind,鈥 Russo said. 鈥淵ou were so kind, and that鈥檚 what makes you the sexiest man in the world.鈥

Along with his wife, Donner was also a passionate animal advocate, rescuing dozens of dogs over the years and fighting against the captivity of killer whales.

Though a few of Donner鈥檚 films generated Oscar nominations, he was never nominated. But he got his chance to thank the academy 鈥 and his many friends and colleagues 鈥 at that tribute.

鈥淭his industry is my friend, and it鈥檚 been the greatest gift in the world to me,鈥 Donner said. 鈥淵ou guys are all my Oscar.鈥
