Rocker lives for small-venue shows

CHANG Chen-yue, also known as A-Yue, is one of Taiwan's most popular rock singers, songwriters and guitarists. The well-known pop musician is famous for his independent attitude.

His successful collaboration with Taiwan rapper MC HotDog created popular songs like "Wo Yao Qian" (I Need Money) and "Wo Ai Tai Mei" (I Love Taiwan Girls).

Chang formed Super Band with three other heavyweights in Taiwan's music industry - Lo Tayu, Jonathan Lee and Chau Wakin - two years ago. The group gave more than 50 concerts last year before disbanding.

Chang, 36, released his first album, "I Just Like You," in 1993, and he has around 12 albums so far. He reached the top of the Chinese musical world in 2007 with the release of the album "OK." "Missing (you) is a Kind of Illness," a duet with Singapore's Tanya Tsai, was the album's big hit.

Chang appeared at Mao Livehouse in Shanghai recently for a commercial event dressed in his trademark casual style - hat, white T-shirt and red pants. He sang three new songs including one with an unannounced guest, MC HotDog. Chang spoke with members of the media in Shanghai about his future plans.

Q: You created a theme song for this soft drink as the advertising song. Is it your latest song creation?

A: Actually not. It's a song I composed in 2007, and I rearranged it as the theme song for this commercial event. In fact, I have a lot of songs which haven't been released on albums or not completed yet as a demo. But different from other singers, I put all of them on the Internet for my fans. I need their feedback and it helps me with the creative process.

Q: Do you have any plans for a new album?

A: Since my last album "OK" and the song "Missing (you) is a Kind of Illness" in 2007, I haven't released a new album. But I have never stopped creating new works and now I am preparing a new album. For me, spending two to three years on an album is not a long time, as I have high requirements for my music and myself. Song ideas come from my life. I need to feel life - to play, participate in sports and to think.

Q: What's your performance schedule for this year?

A: Last year I gave more than 50 concerts as a member of Super Band. It was a very good experience, but I did get tired after so many large-scale shows. I think small live shows are more my style. I enjoy them more. This year I will take a break, spending more time on small shows and participating in some music festivals. I will give concerts in some other cities in China, like Lanzhou, Urumqi and Xi'an.

Q: Super Band was disbanded last year. Do you have any plan to form a new band?

A: In the near future, the answer is no. I have much to learn at this moment, and I don't have enough time. It's too time-consuming and tiring to give so many shows as a band member. So I will not consider forming another band at the moment.
