Selling arts from private palace

RONGBAOZHAI, a 300-year-old Beijing art establishment known as the "Private Forbidden City," offers the "best of the best" for its spring auction in Shanghai.

Nearly 100 artworks selected from 1,000 pieces to be auctioned in mid-June are displayed at 948 Dongdaming Road from today through Sunday.

The auction will be held June 16-17 after a preview from June 14-15.

The highlight is the collection of Liu Haifeng, an art lover and entrepreneur of the Republic of China period (1911-1949). He had close ties with Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi and Yu Youren, all major names in China's modern art history.

In that collection, a highlight is a copy of "A Landscape of Dong Yuan" by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) and Pu Ru (1896-1963), a grandson of the last emperor's brother.

Another highlight is a figure painting on rice paper by Xu Beihong (1895-1953), who seldom painted on rice paper. The work with clear and intricate lines and bright colors is representative of Xu, who is known for combining the concepts and skills of Eastern and Western art.

The "best of the best" is what sellers and buyers are seeking nowadays.

"That might explain the success of Rongbaozhai's first landing in Shanghai for last year's autumn auction," says Zheng Qixin, a member of the auction house staff.

Emphasizing clear provenance and its good reputation, Rongbaozhai provides visitors with free on-site evaluation and appraisal of artworks. Experts are on hand to answer questions during the preview.
