Seven pianos, 14 hands to astound with sound
THE unique Piano Seven septet from Switzerland will stage at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on July 10, complete with breathtaking video art. Expect a powerful and emotional sound with Latin, jazz and blues elements.
They will be joined by a guest percussionist and violinist.
There have been successful piano quartets but Piano Seven is the first successful "band" to combine seven of the grand percussion instruments.
Piano Seven presents original music composed by the pianists themselves. During concerts there's passionate improvisation by one or two pianists and accompaniment by the others.
The septet was the inspiration 24 years ago of Fran?锟爋is Lindemann and Sebastian Santa-Maria - it was to be a one-off experiment.
But it was so successful that the musicians carried on and Piano Seven is enormously successful, often sold-out, staging standing-room-only concerts.
"The volume and power of seven pianos together is not seven times the power of one," says Lindemann. "This is also explained by physical acoustic phenomenon of the sound. Seven trumpets together don't sound 7 X 1."
The artists got together in 1986 and has staged more than 150 concerts in Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East. The group has issued several CDs, a video and DVD.
The current performers are Fran?锟爋is Lindemann, Michel Bastet, Olivier Rogg, Pierre-Luc Vallet, Valentin Peiry, Marc Perrenoud and Fabrizio Chiovetta.
The show features two video artists, Daniel Wyss and Bastien Genoux.
Two guest musicians will perform: Levon, a young percussionist who studied at the New School University in New York and at the Conservatory of Geneva; and violinist St??phanie D??caillet, educated in Sion at Tibor Varga, and also the Conservatory of Geneva. She is a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Lausanne.
