'Shanghai Legend' for double bass
A composition about Shanghai, for double bass and piano, will be staged at the Shanghai Concert Hall next Sunday.
Shanghai-born, US-based double bass player Lu Yuanxiong will perform with Brazilian pianist Jose Feghali.
Since 2008 Lu has been arranging diverse concerts in Shanghai and this is one of them.
It will be the world premiere of "Shanghai Legend for Double Bass and Piano" by American composer Robert Garwell.
The program also includes Debussy's "Clair de Lune," Schubert's "Impromptu" in G flat major, Shostakovich's adagio from Ballet Suite No. 2 and Wang Liansan's "Newspaper Boy."
"Shanghai Legend" is based on images of Shanghai that Garwell assembled from his Chinese friends, media coverage and research - without having visited.
But he will make his first visit to China when he attends the concert.
Garwell combines the traditional five-tone Chinese scale and Western orchestration to present an image of Shanghai that is both traditional and modern.
"I will definitely go to the tallest building and have a good look at the amazing city," he says.
Date: July 22, 10:30am
Venue: Shanghai Concert Hall
Venue: 523 Yan'an Rd E.
Tickets: 30-50 yuan (US$4.7-7.83)
