Shaolin kung fu drama wows audiences
A spectacular Shaolin kung fu drama "Soul of Shaolin" - complete with "flying" monks and astonishing martial arts - will be staged on April 5 and 6 at Shanghai City Theater.
The drama was staged at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and staged briefly on Broadway for the Chinese Lunar New Year in January 2009. The martial arts and acrobatics received lavish praise. It has no subtitles, but none is needed.
The drama tells a fictionalized story of Hui Guang, who in fact was one of the first kung fu monks of Shaolin Temple on Mt Songshan in Central China's Henan Province. It was founded in the fifth century AD.
The show tells the story of Hui Guang who was separated from his mother by bandits when he was a baby. She gave him half a jade piece, and kept the other half. The boy is saved by Shaolin monks, taken to the temple and taught kung fu. As a young man, he tries to stop a fight in town and happens to pick up the other piece of jade. He sees his mother, who has been forced to beg. They are reunited but the abbot refuses to allow him to leave the temple to join his mother - he must fight his way out.
The show has been performed more than 500 times in China and overseas. In 2009 and 2011 it was named a "key cultural expert project." It was the first original Asian production on Broadway.
The Shanghai stop is part of a domestic tour.
"We will develop the show into a long-term cultural brand," says Jiang Dongxu, the martial arts choreographer of the show. "We will continue to work with famous foreign theaters and showcase young kung fu talent."
