ITALY’S Naples is one of the oldest cities in the world. In the second millennium BC, it was already inhabited by the Greeks. The third-largest municipality in Italy was the capital city of the Kingdom of Naples between 1282 and 1816. The city has long been a center of art, literature and architecture. Today historical buildings and monuments of different styles and eras, including Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, still stand in downtown Naples, as witness to its over 2,800 years of history. It is dotted with 448 old churches, one of the world’s most dense gatherings of houses of worship. Its historic city center, covering 1,700 hectares, is the largest in Europe and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. As the birthplace of pizza and the mandolin, the music, food, culture and history are not to be missed.
