Spell-binding evening of dazzling magic

A helicopter will be "created" from thin air and spectators will be hypnotized to recall their past lives, promises young Taiwanese magician Lu Chen who practices both spectacular illusion and close-up magic.

Lu will perform on November 10 and 11 at the Shanghai International Gymnastic Center during the 14th Shanghai International Arts Festival.

"Magic is something surprising. I won't reveal too much. I'll create a helicopter out of thin air. Or I'll use hypnosis to allow you think about what you have done in your previous life," 36-year-old Lu says.

Lu won many fans during his spectacular performances in the Chinese Spring Festival Gala on CCTV in 2009, 2010 and 2012. In one of the shows, he "teleported" a ring into a real egg.

He inspired quite a few magic programs on TV stations across China.

Lu started learning magic when he was age 7.

He has performed in Las Vegas and Hollywood, two of the biggest magic show venues in the United States.

He has performed in many countries, including the UK, Japan and South Korea.

In June, he was honored as Magician of the Year by the US-based Academy of Magical Arts.

Since early this year Lu has been on a world magical tour, visiting Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou of Guangdong Province and Beijing.

In these shows, a member of the audience, who catches a "flying saucer," will go on stage and partner with Lu.

Lu first performed in Shanghai in 2009. He set up his first magic workshop in the city and visits Shanghai almost every month these years.

He says his final goal is to give a big show in Las Vegas.

His advice for young magicians is "perseverance and passion."

In his Shanghai performance, Lu will work with Liu Honghu, an expert in mouth diseases.

Some proceeds will be donated to the Health Campaign of the Shanghai Special Care Foundation.

It raises awareness of mouth ailments and diseases and helps developmentally disabled children.
