St Regis springs into lunch

WITH sweeping views over Pudong, one of the city's most established fine dining Italian restaurants, Danieli's, is tempting diners with a new season menu, as Sam Riley reports.

The St Regis Shanghai has launched a spring lunch at its Italian fine dining restaurant Danieli's, offering some of the old-style service and the finest produce at great value.

The spring menu offers a selection of 10 favorite starters, soups, salads, pastas, mains, desserts or cheese for just 120 yuan (US$17.50)

The three-course set menu is designed by St Regis' new executive chef Warren Brown and is a collection of light, healthy flavors using the freshest ingredients.

Situated on the 39th floor, with sweeping views over Pudong, Danieli's is one of the city's most established traditional fine dining Italian restaurants.

While the view is eye-catching, there is also an open kitchen where one can see the chefs in action.

The salmon carpaccio with capers, shallots, coriander and crispy garden greens is a light version of this classic dish showcasing Brown's emphasis on fresh, simple flavor combinations. The accompanying Dijon lemon citronette adds a zesty lift to the dish.

Brown has added daily specials to take advantage of the best of the spring season, including a daily pasta and soup special.

Other dishes that tempt the palate are a starter of parma ham and cantaloupe with shaved Parmesan and truffle, and a braised pork cheek served with grilled seasonal vegetables for the mains.

The menu lets diners sample some of the best produce available at the St Regis, at just a fraction of the price of their normal a la carte menu, providing terrific value.

Mains all come with a choice of side dish of either a creamy oven-baked cauliflower with mozzarella or a crispy fresh haricot vert with spring potato salad.

The dessert selection is simple but elegant with choice of a strawberry panacotta, orange ricotta cheese cake or a classic Italian lemon meringue tart.

The panacotta is a great example of the skills in the kitchen. Creamy but still light, it was a perfect sweet finish to a business lunch.

The lunch comes with a choice of one soft drink or freshly brewed coffee or tea and is available from 11:30am to 2pm from Monday to Friday.

The St Regis also offers diners the chance to sample the kitchen's fare during its Sunday brunch that offers a different experience from many other brunches around the city.

Rather than the line with a plate buffet scrum, Danieli's keeps things elegant and stylish, offering an antipasti table, a la carte main courses, pastas and a selection of its decadent desserts.

It's an unrushed and relaxing experience that comes at 318 yuan including free-flow mineral water or soft drinks or with free flow Moet & Chandon champagne and selected Italian wines for 438 yuan.

Prices do not include a 15-percent surcharge.
