Stage director tackles love in 'Doppelganger'
HONG Kong veteran theater director and cultural critic Edward Lam will bring his latest drama "The Doppelganger" to Shanghai in September.
It is an adaptation of the popular Chinese novel "Xi Xiang Ji" ("Romance of the West Chamber"), which is set during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).
The play is a love tragicomedy that focuses on the theme of marriage.
In particular, it looks at how a woman deals with the love lives of those around her.
While most stage works focusing on women usually deal with the characters' own problems, "Doppelganger" considers what these characters can do for each other.
Lam is known for writing great dialogue, and this play is no exception as he juggles several complex love stories.
"Doppelganger" stars well-known Taiwanese actress and singer Rene Liu and actor David Wang. Liu plays two characters, including Cupid.
Liu says she's happy to be working with Lam once again.
"It has been eight years after our collaboration for '18 Springs,' and I was so looking forward to working with him again," says Liu, best known for her roles in the films "A World Without Thieves" and "Double Vision." She returns to the stage for the first time in six years.
"18 Springs" is Lam's stage adaptation of the Eileen Chang novel "Affair of Half a Lifetime."
After eight successful performances in Shenzhen (Guangdong Province) and Hong Kong, "Doppelganger" will move on to Guangzhou, Nanjing (Jiangsu Province), Beijing, Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) and Changsha (Hunan Province) this month before coming to Shanghai at the Oriental Art Center.
The play also marks the 20th anniversary of the Edward Lam Dance Theater.
