TV cooking contest comes to town
A popular TV cooking contest, "Chu Wang Zheng Ba" (literally "Battle for Chef King"), with both foreign and Chinese chefs has moved its kitchen venue from Beijing to Shanghai's Sinan Mansions (55 Sinan Road), with its second season starting on May 1.
The five-episode contest will be broadcast on CCTV-2 during the Labor Day holiday from May 1 to 5.
In each videotaped episode, Chinese and foreign chefs are split into two teams of three and told to create six dishes: appetizer, two main courses, soup, snack and desert.
It a test not only of cooking skills, but also ingenuity, team spirit and resourcefulness. Not all the required ingredients are provided; even salt or sugar may be missing.
The 30-people judge panel is composed of food writers, food critics and media critics. The team with the most votes for all six dishes wins. The losers must taste a "dark" course, such as fried black ants.
In the light-hearted show, the chefs will have to overcome unexpected challenges, exchange tips and techniques of Chinese and foreign cooking and promote traditional and homemade dishes.
The five-episode contest will be broadcast (the exact time not decided yet) on CCTV-2 during the Labor Day Holiday (from May 1 to 5).
