Tan Dun honored Golden Lion Award

CHINESE composer Tan Dun was honored Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Board of the Venice Biennale today.

The award will be presented to Tan during the 61st International Contemporary Music Festival in September, honoring his significant contribution to contemporary music.

At the awarding ceremony, Tan will be acknowledged for his continuous efforts in art creations that connect tradition to innovations, history to current issues. His idea of calling for nature protection through music is appreciated, with representative works like his “organic music” series spotlighting water, stones, paper and ceramics alongside traditional Chinese musical instruments.

The award also honors a lifetime of progressive music-making in Tan. That includes his creation in high-profile operas like The First Emperor, commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and premiered with Placido Domingo as the leading role, Marco Polo and Tea with successful world tours, as well as movie scores like the Grammy-awarded piece for Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and that for Zhang Yimou’s Hero and Feng Xiaogang’s Banquet.

Tan’s visual and music art work “Living in the Future” highlighted the Chinese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015. And this time, he will conduct Torino Symphony Orchestra presenting his sinfonia concertante “Marco Polo” and percussion concerto “The Tears of Nature” at Teatro alle Tese on September 30, which will be broadcasted through Italian TV channels.
