Tune in to contemporary music treats
THE 5th New Music Week gets under way on Sunday, bringing to the city 12 concerts, five seminars and a contest to be held at Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Conservatory of Music and public parks and squares.
A total of 116 performers from six countries and regions will take part in 45 musical works created by 25 composers.
Performances will feature works by famous contemporary names such as Ye Xiaogang, Sofia Gubaidulina, Heinz Holliger, George Crumb and Harrison Birtwistle - some will be taking part in music week activities.
The music event also will see performances by two ensembles-in-residence, the celebrated Swiss ensemble Contrechamps and French Les Temps Modernes - plus the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tiankong Chorus and the Netherlands-based Ensemble Insomnio.
"New Music Week is sure to offer a fabulous feast of varied and vigorous new music with a large crowd of virtuosos and excellent musical works," says Wen Deqing, artistic director of the event and a professor at Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
World-renowned Gubaidulina, now over 80 years old, is one of the three composers-in-residence for the New Music Week.
The most striking feature for this year's line-up is the freshness of the works, says Wen. All the music is recently composed, with 16 works receiving their world premieres in Shanghai.
Tuvan throat singing legend Sainkho Namtchylak, whose experimental style also incorporates many other types of music, will give a free performance at Xujiahui Park and perform at the closing ceremony.
"Contemporary music is often regarded as being for a minority, like artists and intellectuals. But I do hope that we can help bring this music to a wider audiences," Wen says.
The first New Music Week in 2008 attracted a combined audience of 3,000. Last year, some 7,000 people attended, and Wen predicts around 8,000 this year.
