FOR Americans living an ocean from their homeland, this could mean a Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce or even a turkey.
However, this need not be the case for Americans living in Shanghai, as the city's many restaurants have embraced the holiday with special dinners next Thursday, each offering something a little different.
So, instead of celebrating this Thanksgiving at a pricey international hotel, why not try somewhere with less elegance and refinement, but where the company is fun and the food and drinks are plentiful.
Here are some of the best spots in town where expats can give thanks, surrounded by friends and family, this Thanksgiving.
Malone's
Thanksgiving at Malone's has been a tradition in Shanghai for the past 17 years. It offers a classic turkey dinner with sides of smoked ham, baked yams and garlic mashed potato. The night has become so popular that it tends to sell out early, so make sure to book ahead.

Boxing Cat Brewery
Beginning with a roasted pumpkin soup, the Cat micro-brewery keeps serving up unique and savory dishes including a drunken fall plum salad, a candied spiced sweet potato casserole and a holiday ham with spiked pineapple chutney. And turkey, of course. You can wash it all down with free-flow beer and wine.

Bubba's
If you are looking for a smoke-roasted USDA turkey, then Bubba's is the only place in town. Their famous turkeys are surrounded by classic sides like garlic mashed potatoes, Southwestern-style gravy and corn bread stuffing. Leave room if you can for a pumpkin pie and enjoy all the wine you can drink with your meal.

The menu features tweaked versions of old favorites, including a seafood ceviche salad, chipotle cream corn mashed potatoes and an achiote roasted turkey with mole-style gravy. The real kicker is a glass of homemade, aged tequila eggnog.

All that food for just 188 yuan (US$29.46) leaves you plenty of money to spend on Big Bamboo's wide selection of specialty drinks.
