Vienna, Berlin orchestras to headline new season

THE Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, two great orchestras, will highlight the 2017-18 season of the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center.

Led by Andris Nelsons, the Vienna Philharmonic will bring works of Strauss’ “Ein Heldenleben,” Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7” and “Symphony No. 8” on October 24-25. It is the first concert after the five-year strategic cooperation was signed between the orchestra and Shanghai Oriental Arts Center in 2016.

As per the agreement, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform at the center every year until 2021 with a world-class conductor to be chosen by the audience.

After its last visit 12 years ago, the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, will present two concerts on November 16-17. It will perform works of Strauss, Brahms, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov.

Chinese pianist Lang Lang will also join in with Bartok’s “Piano Concerto No. 2.” Besides these two orchestras, another 100 programs will be staged at the center — in categories of symphony and concerto, chamber, recital, opera and drama, dance and colorful stage.

The St Petersburg Eifman Ballet from Russia will kick off the season with “Anna Karenin” and the Chinese premiere of “Rodin” on September 7-10.

A new production by Boris Eifman, “Rodin” features the life and creative work of the great sculptor Auguste Rodin and his apprentice, lover and muse, Camille Claudel.

Eifman’s ballet will present a new concept of the world of human passion, studied masterfully by Rodin and Claudel in their works.

Lin Hwai-min with his Cloud Gate Dance Theater from Taiwan will present dance theater “Rice” on October 18-21. It is a work based on the choreographers’ personal experiences in farming and harvesting. With the movement of their bodies, the dancers will create the growth of rice and showcase the powerful cycle of life.

The season’s dance program includes Quorum Ballet from Portugal, Spanish Ballet of Murcia, Russian State Ballet and Attraction from Hungary, champion of the 2013 “Britain’s Got Talent” for their unique dances with shadows.

“And Gives Us the Shadows” by Royal Dramatic Theater of Sweden will be the only non-Chinese drama. It’s adapted from Lars Noren’s work on Eugene O’Neill’s autobiography “Long Day’s Journey into Night.” It has features of Greek tragedy and modern comedy.

Apart from the traditional stage performances, works combined with art, media and technology will also be introduced to the urban space to fulfill its “Art Plus” concept. That will include a photo exhibition on the 175th anniversary of Vienna Philharmonic, and an exhibition on German art and design, which will be open to the public from October to November at the International Artwork Trading Center in Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone and Shanghai Oriental Arts Center respectively.
