Waltzes and marches for New Year's shows
THE New Year's concert is becoming a staple in Shanghai.
The ORF (Austrian Radio and Television) Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna will make its Shanghai debut on Thursday with an atypical holiday concert that isn't filled with Strauss' waltzes.
The performance at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center in Pudong will feature Mozart's "Magic Flute Overture," Schubert's "Unfinished" symphony, Strauss' "The Bat: Overture" and the "Thunder and Lightning Polka." It will be conducted by Ariel Zuckermann.
Meanwhile, another Austrian orchestra, Strauss Legacy Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform the "Blue Danube Waltz," the "Radetzky March," "Lightning Polka" and other festive works for the New Year season, under the baton of Attila Szabo.
The program will also feature the "Treasure Waltz" and other famous Strauss waltzes, in addition to Chinese works including "A Beautiful Night" and "Spring Festival Overture."
The orchestra was founded in 1842 to carry on the legacy of the Strauss family, particularly Johann II (1825-1899). It also presents modern works and cooperates with vocalists.
Hungarian-born Szobo, 69, is both a conductor and violinist. When he was 21 he won the Bartok Award and established a string quartet in the same year.
During the concert he will play his 1686 Guarneri violin, valued at US$2 million.
