Western take on magical, misted Mt Huang

FABLED, misted Mt Huang in Anhui Province has always inspired traditional Chinese artists who typically render its ever-changing vistas of crags, clouds and twisted pines in ink.

Today Spanish-Dutch artist Alwin van der Linde presents a solo exhibition, "Media Mt Huang," featuring a very different and colorful look at the magnificent landmark.

It is underway at the Shanghai Art Museum through May 10.

"Through these paintings, I hope to transmit the mystery and magic of this natural landscape," says Linde. "It is my way of paying homage to this beautiful and fascinating region where classical Chinese painting found its inspiration."

It's a startling experience to see Mt Huang - typically in blacks, grays and whites on rice paper - presented in oils on canvas, as seen by a Western artist.

Linde, a royal painter in Spain, creates a symphonic poem of light and color that captures the peculiar cliffs and interplay between volume and emptiness.

Linde is known for his achievements in portraiture, still lifes, landscapes and other subjects.

A glass vase, fresh flowers and the seashore are all rendered in superb realistic technique. He evokes a peaceful, clean and quiet world.

"There is already too much noise and too many crowds in modern society, and I hope visitors can enter a silent place among my paintings, because I think it is the core of nature," Linde says.

In 2008, Linde held a joint exhibition of photographs and oil paintings with General Shao Hua, chairman of the China Association of Photographers, in Beijing.

"I have always had a strong interest in Chinese culture, and there is no doubt the aesthetic and spiritual influences of Chinese tradition have contributed to my formation as an artist," he says.
