Wide range of new releases for holiday
The upcoming Spring Festival holiday is expected to be one of the most lucrative screening seasons of the year with eight new productions being released.
According to box-office tracker Dengta Data, pre-sale movie tickets for Spring Festival have already exceeded 300 million yuan (US$47.2 million) as of Friday.
Among the most highly anticipated releases are epic war film 鈥淲ater Gate Bridge,鈥 drama 鈥淣ice View,鈥 comedy 鈥淥nly Fools Rush In鈥 and cartoon 鈥淧leasant Goat and Big Big Wolf: Dunk for Future.鈥
A sequel to 鈥淭he Battle at Lake Changjin,鈥 the highest-grossing film in the history of Chinese cinema, 鈥淲ater Gate Bridge鈥 retains the original cast and crew and centers on the new mission and efforts of 鈥淐ompany Seven鈥 on the retreat route of American troops during the Korean War (1950-53).
Movie buffs have also expressed interest in Wen Muye鈥檚 drama 鈥淣ice View,鈥 his second feature film following the critically acclaimed 2008 production 鈥淒ying to Survive.鈥
Starring Yi Yangqianxi, the film follows a young man鈥檚 hard but heartwarming life in the city of Shenzhen to give his family a better life.
Yi, known for impressive performances in the costume drama series 鈥淭he Longest Day in Chang鈥檃n鈥 and children鈥檚 movie 鈥淏etter Days,鈥 said the film focuses on people鈥檚 opportunities and entrepreneurship possibilities in the new era and encourages everyone who鈥檚 struggling to find success and happiness.
Three years after his last film 鈥淧egasus,鈥 local writer-turned-director Han Han presents 鈥淥nly Fools Rush In,鈥 a film about a motorcycle trip taken by an estranged father and son who are reunited after many years.
The comedy 鈥淭oo Cool to Kill,鈥 helmed by Xing Wenxiong, is a remake of the Japanese movie 鈥淭he Magic Hour鈥 that chronicles a walk-on鈥檚 unexpected involvement in a conspiracy as he is invited to play the leading role of a mysterious murderer for a film.
Animated film 鈥淧leasant Goat and Big Big Wolf-Dunk For Future鈥 is about how a pleasant goat and big wolf are teamed up for a city鈥檚 basketball competition.
Additionally, Zhang Yimou鈥檚 鈥淪niper,鈥 a war film about snipers鈥 resistance to American aggression during the Korean War, and animated movies 鈥淩un, Tiger Run!鈥 and 鈥淏oonie Bears Back To Earth鈥 will be released.
Besides theatrical releases, movie fans will have many alternatives on streaming websites during Spring Festival.
On iQiyi, an array of new Internet films will be offered, including costume drama 鈥淟uoyang,鈥 romantic comedy 鈥淣ortheastern Bro鈥 and comedy 鈥淩eunion Dinner.鈥
Combining suspense and action, 鈥淟uoyang鈥 examines twin sisters鈥 self-redemption.
鈥淣ortheastern Bro,鈥 set to the backdrop of Harbin in the late 1990s, revolves around a debt collector who falls in love with the daughter of a debtor.
鈥淩eunion Dinner,鈥 directed by Singaporean filmmaker Ong Kuo-Sin, centers on two families鈥 hilarious Spring Festival reunion dinner to discuss their children鈥檚 wedding plans.
