Wimbledon hawk-napped
A HAWK used to patrol skies and deter pigeons from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships has been stolen. Rufus, a Harris hawk, was stolen in its cage between Thursday night and Friday morning from a car in a private driveway in Wimbledon, London's Metropolitan police said.
The company that owns the hawk had left a rear car window open for ventilation. The hawk, a family pet, was trained to fly about the tennis lawns every day, scaring but not attacking smaller birds such as pigeons that could distract players and bother the audience. Police said the family is "very distressed." Hawks have been used at Wimbledon for around 12 years.
