World premiere of Batsheva’s ‘Venezuela’
THE Batsheva Dance Company is premiering its latest show “Venezuela” at the Shanghai International Dance Center Theater.
Based in Tel Aviv, Israel’s most famous dance company was founded by Martha Graham and Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild in 1964. Its inception was marked by Israel’s growing interest in American modern dance, mainly through the work of Graham and Anna Sokolow. But under the influence of Graham’s aesthetic, the company soon began to include works of emerging Israeli choreographers into its repertory.
Nowadays, Batsheva Dance Company has been critically acknowledged and popularly embraced as one of the foremost contemporary dance companies in the world. Over 250 performances are witnessed by audiences of over 100,000 every year.
They are ready and proud to showcase the world premiere of “Venezuela,” created by Ohad Naharin. As an artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company from 1990, Naharin created Gaga, a movement language and pedagogy that has defined the company’s training and continues to characterize Israeli contemporary dance.
“I firmly believe that physical pleasure from physical activity is part of being alive,” he said.
Divided equally, “Venezuela” presents the audience with two different interpretations of the same arrangement. By exchanging props, lighting and music, the quick switch between solemn and passionate atmosphere not only surprises the audience, but also reflects on the proposition that man cannot see the same thing twice.
“Venezuela” is only showing in Shanghai, don’t miss out.
