Yankee Doodle, keep it up
THERE'S plenty of Yankee Doodling on July 4 - burgers, barbecue, beer, live music. Aubrey Buckingham goes to town. With less than a week since his unfortunate passing, Shanghai's bars are already cashing in with Wacko Jacko tribute parties. We thought most places play his music incessantly anyway? Not that his tunes are no good, but do we really want to hear them all at once?
There's even greater reason to party hard this week as America celebrates its 234th Independence Day after kicking the Brits back across the Atlantic. Coincidently, the Bulldog Shanghai pub is also closing in on a year since dropping its "British" moniker, making this year's ID4 celebrations even more apt.
Tomorrow and Saturday, all burgers, sandwiches and hot dogs will be buy one get one free for revelers to fill their stomachs before chugging beer and getting absolutely sloshed. Helping the cause will be American Craft Beers for 30 yuan (US$4.40) each or four for 100 yuan throughout the festivities, while the usual buy-one-get-one-free deal still applies.
No one likes a quiet bar, and the Bulldog's house band Bombshelter will be pumping out live rock music. Even more fitting, English DJ Sexypaul will be manning the decks and spinning Americana in between sets. Expect him to be as condescending as ever, fulfilling the ceremonial role Britain plays to the United States.
Anyone not thinking of Malone's when craving American fare has simply got it all wrong. As the first American bar and restaurant in Shanghai, opening in 1994, it is practically the longest-serving and most famous American establishment aside from the American consulate. Or so it says on the press release.
What is undeniable is that Malone's sells a ton of burgers - an average of 130 a day (across three outlets now), according to them.
What is clear is if it's a huge burger you want, then Malone's is the place to get it. Wash it all down on Saturday with some penny-pinching cost-cutting specials.
A hundred yuan gets you four Budweisers, while Guinness and Kilkenny pints are 40 yuan before 8pm and 60 afterward. If that takes too long to get you legless, then Jack Daniels doubles are 50 yuan with mixer.
Pudong residents can head over to Thumb Plaza with an outdoor BBQ from 1pm. And each main course comes with two side dishes and a live salad station (Caesar's is highly recommended). Puxi punters are not left out either, as the kichen launches the new Summer Grill Menu.
As usual, bands Art 6 and Jagged Edge play Tongren Road and Thumb Plaza respectively, in between the Legends' USA music set will blast 100 percent Yankee music.
The Hongqiao area set is not left out either, as Bubbas hosts its annual July 4 Golf Tournament at Shanghai Tianma Golf and Country Club (e-mail Kenneth at postmaster@bubbas.com.cn for details), while the main event is a Texas-style Que and Brew Festival bash.
Enjoy the joint's great BBQ with live music, drinks and food specials all day from 1pm, and a Winner-Takes-All Team Corn Hole Tournament, which should make more sense to those actually celebrating the event.
