Zhejiang bayberry fest a hit with locals and tourists
A bayberry festival recently kicked off in Changxing County鈥檚 Zhushan Village in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, attracting tourists from around the Yangtze River Delta region to enjoy the juicy fruit. Bayberries are grown on more than 250 hectares in the village, generating an annual output of more than 30 million yuan (US$4.6 million). Near Jiangsu and Anhui provinces, the Zhejiang county is characterized by verdant green landscapes, providing views of wintersweet and orchid blossoms in the spring and tasty bayberries during summer.
The county鈥檚 water quality has improved since it introduced the 鈥渞iver chief鈥 scheme in 2003, in which government officials are appointed as river chiefs tasked with cleaning up waterways. Due to the cleaner water, local residents even regained the practice of rinsing rice and vegetables in rivers. Over the past decade, the county has benefited from the improved environment to develop tourism.
