Benefits of more than one
THERE are many reasons for pet lovers to have more than one pet. They may want a companion for a favorite dog who is always left alone at home and near the brink of developing "separation anxiety."
Or they want to experience the different pleasures of raising a small dog compared to the sedate company of the current big one. Perhaps they just want another dog.
Actually, dogs are social animals, so they offer a lot of benefits from being bred together.
Although you need to devote more time, money and energy, the rewards in terms of more fun are certainly there.
Training is important if you want a more colorful and happier pet life instead of having them fighting, barking and dragging your shoes or other stuff around your house.
And you must take into consideration dogs' status in the house. Dogs have a complex set of behaviors related to determining each animal's position in the social hierarchy, and they exhibit various postures and other means of communication that reveal their states of mind.
So when you give them treats, petting them or take them out for walk, you'd better start with the one that has a higher position in order to avoid fights between them.
And, normally, the first comer always has a higher status than the new one, the one who has more toys is the leader and the one who eats fastest may have the highest position in the family.
