Cat rescue a success

THE International Fund for Animal Welfare ( IFAW) has provided medical treatment and house training for 300 cats in Tianjin under the "Hope Cat" program, solving their nutritional and health problems.
In November last year, 726 cats destined for the stew pot in southern cities were rescued by Tianjin authorities, and these cats became known collectively as the "Hope Cats."
With the assistance of many pet lovers, half of the rescued cats have been adopted into shelters or homes.
However, despite the huge amount of publicity generated by their efforts, 300 cats are still awaiting adoption.
By getting involved in the rescue, IFAW aims to educate carers about animal welfare and reducing the pain animals experience when undergoing surgery.
It also wants to increase surgery safety levels.
"We hope to share with the local veterinarians our expertise and knowledge of animal welfare," said Kati Loeffler, senior veterinarian advisor from the IFAW.
"At the same time, we hope that they will provide good health care to these 300 cats and other animals," professor Loeffler added.
"As much as the welfare of these cats are a priority, we hope that the Tianjin authorities will continue to support animal rescue, adoption and education efforts, to give homeless animals a warm, loving home."
Grace Gabriel, Asia Head of IFAW said: "Cats and dogs are regarded as companion animals. Be it from a humanitarian, societal or concern for the community perspective, we should stop the practice of consuming dog and cat meat.
"However, due to an absence of animal rights laws in China, there has been an increase in the number of animals being ill-treated. We also hope that China will soon implement laws regarding the treatment of animals.
"In this way, we are not just saving and protecting these 300 cats, but also ourselves," she added.
