Eye of the beholder

ANIMALS Asia has announced the winners of its online photography contest in China that was co-sponsored by Tencent Inc. The winners have been announced just in time to celebrate World Animal Day, which is October 4. About 9,600 people submitted photographs for the contest themed "Sharing love with them." The five categories were: Let's Laugh, We Are Family, Most Creative, Most Touching and Most Popular.

As an ambassador for the Animals Asia Foundation, Hong Kong singer/actress Karen Mok has endorsed the contest. In the past, she has joined a public service program to rescue bears in China. Mok also raises stray cats and dogs.

She says: "Pets bring us lots of fun and happiness. Do not hurt them. We are friends."

Together with local animal protection organizations, Animals Asia will hold award ceremonies in Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Beijing, Dalian, Xi'an and Hong Kong. In October and November, the organization will also exhibit more than 120 photos from this contest to celebrate World Animal Day and express the idea of "caring for animals."

World Animal Day has been celebrated for more than 90 years. October 4 was selected as World Animal Day in honor of St. Francis, a nature and animal lover. World Animal Day offers people a chance to highlight the plight of wildlife.
